The only real upside of sapphire is that it's a hard material which is difficult to scratch. This doesn't mean it's unbreakable. Gorilla glass is also scratch resistant to some level and actually more flexible than sapphire. Sapphire is more stiff. Both Gorilla glass and sapphire can break when dropped.
